Self Awareness begins by asking the sometimes agonising questions “who am I?” And “why do I behave like this?”
A self aware person has a clear perception of their personality, strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions.
Cornell University conducted research into the importance of self awareness. They interviewed 72 CEO’s with business revenues between $50 million and $5 billion. According to them, the most important contributor to their success was self awareness.
Arguably, the two most important things a person will do in pursuit of their dreams is (drum roll…) think and choose. Those that do this best rise to great heights.
One high achieving CEO is Eric Schmidt who leads the mighty Google Company. When asked about the most important choices he had made in life, he responded “I’ve made so many, but one that comes to mind is, I got a coach.” When this was first suggested to him, he wondered what was wrong with him or google. (Aside: its best to get a coach when something ISN’T broken. The coach is designed to help you think and choose better than you would on your own.)
After being coached for some time, he said the benefit lay in someone looking into his life the way he could look into others. “We’re simply not good at seeing ourselves the way others see us” he said.
In other words, his self awareness improved dramatically with the help of a coach/ally.
Apart from this, there are other tools to use. Big point: the tools we use to improve our self awareness are multiplied in effectiveness when we include a mentor or coach in the unpacking and understanding process.
Self improvement is always the slowest improvement!
Imagine discussing the results of a personality profile, a love languages assessment, a strength finders assessment, a 360 degree Leadership Circle evaluation, or a gifts and talents questionnaire.
These are just a few examples of tools that help us become self aware. Find the Ines best suited to you and see the results!
