There is Relationship and then there is everything else.

It could be strenuously argued that riches in life have more to do with the quality of our relationships than the reserves we have in our bank accounts. There is no doubt that relationships are the nerve centre of our lives. At this moment, some may be saying “ouch” and others may smiling agreement.

If this is the case, it should be a compulsory exercise for everyone to evaluate our relational world, in particular the quality of our:

  1. Family relationships
  2. Energising relationships
  3. And our trusting relationships.

Who should we include in the inner circle of our personal and professional worlds?  Where do we start?

Some of us begin this journey by realising we don’t have the right people around us. We have just “accumulated” people around us over time. So let’s start with this thought.

Values and vision undergird great relationships.

Have you meditated on and chosen the values you will build your life on. At the heart of every relationship is the question, “do I like being me?” You will like yourself and approve of yourself most when you have laid down a foundation of healthy, life giving, non-negotiable values.  Then, when you think about commencing an energising or trusting relationship, you can ask, “do we have similar values?” So….

  1. What are your values regarding moral behaviour?
  2. What are your values regarding entertainment?
  3. What are your values regarding education?
  4. What are your values regarding finance?
  5. What are your values regarding humour?
  6. What are your values regarding language?

Continue thinking through what you truly value in life in order to find a right fit with others. And then there is “vision.”

What do you want your future to look like? Where are you going through the coming years? Anyone going the same way will be a good fit. One of the most important questions you can ask of someone you could do life with is “where are you going?” This is a much more penetrating question than “do I like you?”

Let’s choose well. It is vital for our quality of life.
