Divorce and Resurrection – PDF

This booklet was born out of a conviction that, despite decades of Christian leadership, a clearer understanding of the New Testament’s teaching on divorce and remarriage was needed. It offers fresh insights on this important topic.

Many Christians struggle to understand the New Testament’s teaching on divorce and remarriage, often feeling trapped by incomplete or misapplied interpretations. This booklet presents the results of extensive research, exploring real-life scenarios that challenge conventional thinking. It raises important questions about what truly constitutes separation in God’s eyes, offering clarity and deeper biblical insight into this complex and sensitive topic.

In a matter of weeks after her wedding, the new brides’ dreams of a wonderful romance become nightmarish. Time after time he gratifies himself without any thought of bringing pleasure to his wife and she wets the pillow with her tears after every ordeal. Years pass and as much as she is tempted to leave the marriage, she feels no freedom to do so because he isn’t committing adultery. Her child-like faith added to a superficial understanding of Gods views on divorce compel her to remain in the relationship. Two beautiful children and 50 years later she finally concludes that she can take no more and finally separates from him but remains married.

In another scenario, a wife gives the public impression that she is a sweet natured, pleasant personality. Behind closed doors, she has an uncontrollable temper. Over the course of many years, she harms both her husband and children. Her husband, a committed Christian, refuses to retaliate and doesn’t expose her violent behaviour. She hasn’t committed adultery, but it gets to the place where he eventually divorces her and remarries. His Church has a strict policy regarding this and ostracises him.

Jesus said “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matt 19:6). In the above scenarios, who is the person who “separates?”
