In the coming blogs I want to share some of the poems and articles I have collected down through the years. Who knows how I arrived at this thought, but it occurred to me some time ago that some of our well-known children’s stories carry clear and rich Bible themes.

‘The Ugly Duckling’ was one of these.

It is a classic 1843 Danish fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a bird born in a barnyard who was mocked and ostracised by the other ducklings because he wasn’t like them. But when winter gave way to spring, he discovered he had matured into a swan, transformed from an outcast into a the most beautiful of birds.

It is the story of mistaken identity. No one knew who this little bird was, not even himself.

Are you a human being?  You were designed to be a Christian. There is nothing so rare or stunning as one of these in full flight.

I hope you can identify with the gosling’s journey in the lines below.

“If we could only see the end from the beginning

We wouldn’t get discouraged like we do.

Someone’s working in us with a fire and a fan,

And what He starts He works on

Till He’s finished His great plan…

Grubs turn into butterflies in springtime,

And potch uncovers opal when it’s mined,

And ugly ducklings slowly change

Though it seems to take so long,

Transformed at last in splendour

Into the beauty of a swan.

Mistaken Identity
