Any conversation about stress should begin with highlighting “good stress.”

The excitement of the unknown, the unexplored and the un-attempted is something we have all experienced as we took risks to achieve our goals. The stress we placed ourselves under primed us for optimal performance and inspired us to consider the risks involved. We are constantly inspired to push the boundaries and see what we are really capable of.

Alternatively there is high trauma stress that comes upon us unexpectedly and moves us way outside our comfort zone or ability to control the situation.

Then there is everyday stress. Many of our everyday practices and habits occur because we started doing them and continued. Many others did the same things and so we assumed our way of doing life was the norm. Much stress in life is unnecessary. Many of our personal management habits got us by until we became successful, capable of more, busier, and we were found out.

Found out by stress.

My “aha” moment came on the 607X express bus into the heart of Sydney’s CBD one morning. In my mind I scanned all of Design a Decade’s twelve topics and noticed that if any ONE of these areas of my life was declining or stationary, they produced stress in varying degrees. Conversely, I noticed that when I was making progress in all twelve, the big consequence was peace of mind, a sense of confidence and well being. I reflected on my journey as a Design a Decade client for the last decade and the most noticeable and dramatic benefit was my decreased stress levels. My increased productivity is directly attributable to my decreased stress levels.

Now there’s food for thought!
